I loved the MC; I don’t think I’ve ever read a more independent female character, much less in a book as old as this one. She’s also kind of an asshole, which again, I love lmao. She really embodies all the traits male characters are often applauded for, and she exposes the goofiness of heteronormativity along the way? Hell yes. Sexuality, race, and even family are all social constructs. 

I thought the ending was a bit rushed, but

it wasn’t really an ending, was it? The MC’s story is ongoing.

 

It really should go without saying that I don’t condone any of the bad things the MC does. Yes, the SA was bad; the incest mention was bad - but books aren’t made to be morally correct, they’re made to deliver a story and a theme. Failing a book on the basis of some morality test is a waste of your time, and doubly so if it’s a book that was written during a time when society’s morals were completely different than they are now.

A great queer coming of age story with a main character who remains true to herself. It warmed my heart and was the best book I read this year so far. Love how it romanticizes Pennsylvania. I hope Rita Mae is doing well.

This is such a groundbreaking novel for the 1970s. I loved how it was all about being true to yourself despite all of the misogyny and homophobia that the main character faced! 

I did feel like there was not much depth to Molly's relationships with other women and it did feel quite whimsical at times. However, it did reflect the fact that sexuality is very fluid and we are not 100% anything. I would give the novel a 3.5 stars!

This book was outstanding! Rita Mae Brown has such a way with words, it flows off the tougne and makes pure serotonin drip off you. Molly (the main character) has such an interesting and complex personality that is perfectly portrayed and is so refreshing to read, and her take on the world is strong and powerful! Highly, highly recommend!

The insest is a very very small section that is only ever talked about once, there is no actual acts of insest, it is just mentioned later on in the book. Child abuse is touched on near the beginning and it is mentioned slightly more then other things.

The story of Molly Bolt, a lesbian in postwar America, is just as relevant today as it was when it originally published in the 1970s. While we’ve seen more progress and acceptance in recent years, the LGBTQ+ community still faces many issues Molly does.

The main focus is Molly’s exploration of her own sexuality and the community surrounding her—the good, bad, and ugly parts of it. Molly is shamelessly unapologetic about who she is, what she feels, and what she desires, giving us a brazen and bold coming of age story.
