Uh, this book is. fucking crazy. I really appreciated some aspects of this, and was definitely enthralled by Molly's story and coming of age.

I think what I struggled with most is the lack of vulnerability we get from Molly. For me, I need some kind of vulnerability from a main character in order to connect and fully invest in the story, and that felt lacking here.

This is certainly an important book in the landscape of lesbian literature, undoubtedly. But boy was it written in 1973. There's some weird stuff going on, so do check trigger warnings.

just another piece of garbage in the dump that is lesbian pulp fiction.

this book is only considered "revolutionary" because of its shock value; it is nothing but the author trying to see how many incest scenes, lesbophobic tropes, and racial slurs she could shove into 1 book.

Rita Mae Brown's seminal 1973 novel is delightful and subversive. I get why Molly Bolt is canonical - she is a strong-willed and dynamic character. Unfortunately, I wanted more substance, and the novel's structure was all over the place. When the story hits its stride, it is too close to the end. I still think it's worth reading, but I was left wanting more.

will i recommend this book to people ? yes. did i enjoy reading about
“incest” within the first few chapters as well as rape scenes between the MC and one of her love interests ? not really 😭
however, i was able to relate to and understand plenty of things in here in regards to my relationship with lesbianism as well as the world around me.

i see how this book became a cult classic, but it is very much a product of its time and i don’t think has withstood that test.
it’s an interesting exploration of queer experiences and sexuality, but the line of taboo is very blurred and that doesn’t work in the book’s favour. with the adult/minor relationships, incest being encouraged, sexual assault perpetrated by the main character, racism and antisemitism, and the butch-phobia, it’s a lot to stomach that i’m not really sure is worth the read.
