will i recommend this book to people ? yes. did i enjoy reading about

“incest” within the first few chapters as well as rape scenes between the MC and one of her love interests ? not really 😭

however, i was able to relate to and understand plenty of things in here in regards to my relationship with lesbianism as well as the world around me.

Bold and honest account of the life of a woman’s journey from childhood as she discovers her sexuality and how others react to her revelation in 20th century USA. Interesting to feel so immersed in the life of the main character, and understand her thoughts and feelings, feel her losses and betrayals. Not always the most likeable main characters, which I enjoyed. A truly honest account.

I can understand why this was perceived as shocking at the time of  first publishing, not because of the theme of lesbianism, but the tone and word choice is often harsh, blunt and direct. There are some explicit scenes which are not written akin to a modern day romance novel. The main character is rightly unapologetic in how she lives her life, with a hint of aiming to intentionally shock.

Lackluster autobiography. It's a classic, but not worth going out of your way to read in 2022 and beyond. I did find the narrator extremely well-realized. She is combative and compassionate and full of unexpected ideas.

Rubyfruit Jungle is unlike anything I’ve read before. It was fast-paced and witty while addressing such evil injustices which is rare in a book dealing with queer themes. Molly is such a strong protagonist and I couldn’t get enough of her story. I’ve always loved a coming of age novel, so one featuring a lesbian main character was a dream come true.
