Re-read November 2018: I previously read this in February 2016; I loved it then and I love it now. I re-read it for Battle of the Books at school, and I’m eager to hear what the students thought of it. I also used the author’s notes in the back of the book to teach some lessons on writing, drafting, and creating graphic novels during National Novel Writing Month workshops. Definitely need to read the rest of these by Chmakova!

Originally read February 2016: Middle grade graphic novel about a girl who is nervous about attending a new school, and fails to follow the rules she made for herself to fit in. Peppi joins the art club but can’t bring herself to speak up and share her ideas, and can’t bring herself to apologize to the boy she hurt on the first day.

Great story. Perfect message for middle school kids.

Compelling, humorous, handles realistic middle school drama well. Highly recommended for ages 10-13.

Super cute. Really like it. Wish the colors were different- more saturated, but otherwise, thought it was great!

This will be the hot book to pass around in my class this year. Super cute and relatable, great message, and I loved the author notes at the back.

I really enjoyed this one, both art style and story. Will make a point to check out more of her graphic novels.
funny lighthearted

I loved how Awkward captures the relatable experience of unintentionally hurting others out of ignorance, carelessness, or fear, rather than malice or ill intent, and the subsequent struggle of figuring out how to apologize without making things worse. The story beautifully portrays the emotional weight of such moments and the journey toward making amends.

Additionally, for all the art and science enthusiasts out there, this book offers a meaningful reminder that every discipline is a vital part of S.T.E.A.M. and life.
