I don't think I will ever watch the movie based on this book. Horrifying and upsetting, and just monstrous. This hurts every ounce of heart I have.

People of the world who live for all the reality TV garbage, this is the type of reality they need to be paying attention to. But no one is.

This was one of those stories that you just don't want to believe really happened. Only it did.

Like is hardly the word for how I felt about this narrative, in fact I read it with an ever mounting horror at how an entire village could be so easily whipped up to a frenzy of hatred against an innocent woman. However her story needs to be heard, hence my four star rating.

This was one of the hardest books to read. I had to stop several times to gather courage and finish it.

Soraya’s story is one of the thousands stories that took place in Iran and that makes the whole ordeal the more horrifying.

The way these people used Islam and Quran to justify their horrific actions when both Islam and Quran prohibit them. How Soraya was stoned to death for something she didn’t do (and even if she did this is NOT how Islam tells us to deal with it). The way the men who accused her, plotted for her death, killed her and took pleasure in doing so, these men did exactly what they accused her of, but since they are men, since they are in position of religious power and have enough money, the law doesn’t apply to them.

Soraya was one of many but Soraya had an aunt who told her story to the world so she can immortalize the innocent woman and expose those who wronged her. Soraya was one of many, and all, may Allah grant them the highest degrees of heaven.

I have a very hard time believing that this story is completely based in fact. There are just some details that the author could not have found out, even second-hand. The most blatant example of this would be the thoughts that run through Soraya's head as she is being put into the hole before the stoning. She had no opportunity to tell anyone what her last thoughts were before she died. Another example would be the activities that her husband engaged in while he was in "the city." There is really no way the author would have known this or had a way of finding out. I'm not suggesting that this story isn't based on an actual event, or that it isn't horrific. I was just constantly distracted by thinking to myself, "How would the author have known this?"

All that aside, I think that it is a good portrait of life in third world countries, where violence is their main form of entertainment and women can be discarded at random. I wouldn't hold this book up as an example of Middle Eastern life because I feel like there are more well rounded and generous depictions to be had.
