This is my second novel based on African mythology in the last few weeks. And this one is WAY MORE my speed. Yes, there is still death and dark aspects. But there is also light and love. I’m not a girlie that can do all darkness. I really appreciated how this author portrayed the mami wata. I love how she approached the forbidden love aspect. I love how our strong FMC always did what she felt was right and still found herself in the end.
This was just really good and I enjoyed it.

Soul of the Deep was an amazing finale to the phenomenal Skin of the Sea. The story picks up 6 months after Simidele’s tough choice to remain in the Sea of the Dead after battling Esu so it was nice to see the progression of prominent characters from the previous novel. Simi started off a little stubborn and annoying but I loved her overall growth once the book ended.
This adventure was even more high-stakes than in the first book and kept my attention from beginning to end. I usually hate when authors feel the need to include romance in their books but the relationship between Simi and Kola was was developed and I couldn’t help rooting for them. The build up of their feelings for each other was well executed throughout the two books and I’m very pleased with how Soul of the Deep decided to tie up their love story.

Without giving too much away, I will say this is a huge development from the first book to the second which I love. We as the readers, get to another side of the beloved character that we hold so close to our heart and are cheering for them to make the right choice, and when reading the sequel to book one it was a page-turner where I didn't want to put it down and if you love a good magical/fantasy folklore about mermaid then this is the book for you.
I had high hopes coming into this book after how amazing the first one was, and it did not disappoint! Although i did like the first one more, the plot of this story added so much to this captivating world! I loved seeing more African mythology woven throughout and watching the characters develop as well. The ending offered closure for the character and was a beautiful close to the book after many twists and turns! I hope we’ll see more from this world but if not, I truly loved how the story wrapped!
