I wish I remembered more of book one because without being tied in to the characters and their relationships there wasn't quite enough here to really get invested. It's a great world and all the plot elements are well done, I just felt lost on the emotional backstory. Also weird pet peeve but it bothered me how often the book referred to Kola as boy for someone clearly old enough to lead.

My Overall Thoughts/Impressions: I dove right into this sequel and conclusion to this rich, vibrant duology after finishing the first one. A book with forbidden romance, adventure, representation!, intrigue, fantasy, and deep layers--I'm always here for that. I haven't read many retellings of A Little Mermaid, but I loved this one.
The first book set up a rich world against the backdrop of the slave trade of Africans in the 15th century in West Africa. The author expounded upon that in this book to create an even brighter and richer tapestry of Yoruban mythology and African history than she did in the first.
Simi was a fascinating character to follow, with a strong voice in the first and the second book. The plot and pacing were well done. I was invested until the very last page. I was very curious to see how the author would choose to end this tale that she created. It did not disappoint.
Content Notes: Violence. Death. Depictions of the brutality of slavery.

A solid sequel that gives a deeper look into West African mythology, history, and magic. The depiction of stories being passed on through oral tradition was a creative way to keep the reader in the loop. This book also has much more under water action and includes several more of the darker mythological creatures— so violence is definitely included. The plot flows nicely and seems to add everything that felt lacking in the first book. While at times the MC can seem stubborn and misled she is also very real and has very natural reactions, which I appreciated. Overall a very solid book that I enjoyed and would recommend.

I loved this duology!!! Natasha brown is such a talented writer!!!!! Like the first book this one didn’t waste any time getting to the actual plot of the book. The way Natasha Brown KNOWS how to write imagery is amazing!!!!!!!!! With that being said tho I do have some critics for it. Also like the first one the chapters are soo long. And this one was a little slower paced than the first one. Overall however I absolutely loved it and highly recommend!
