The first book packed such a punch and this one did not let up. Honestly it was depressing, and reading about a depressed mermaid in the beginning made this hard to get through. Plus all the death, slavery, war, gore, betrayals, it was unrelenting in the middle there. While I loved it, it’s definitely a book that balances that horror of the slave trade route with magical powers of African gods.
