A fantastic sequel to Skin of the Sea. I love the West African lore and setting. I want more!
Simi is fulfilling her promise of helping Olokun pray over the bodies of the dead in the ocean when she discovers that he broke his promise to her and did not return Esu back to Olodumare. Without Esu, the ajogun (anti-gods) are not fully restrained. Can she work with Esu to prevent the ajogun from destroying the world?
Once again, the ending is great but the first half of the novel is rough. There is a lot of main character syndrome where the motivations of other characters don’t make sense if you look at it from their perspective. Things just happen that pull you out because it feels like the author is pushing events instead of letting them unfold naturally for the first half of the book. But once you get more than halfway it comes together.
I hope the author improves because these are great stories, I just don’t want to feel like I’m dragging myself to get through the first half to get there.

Conclusion to the Skin of the Sea duology, Simidele is on another quest to help the whole world, working with ones who she doesn’t completely trust and those she does. Themes of redemption, grief, guilt and overcoming guilt, love, forbidden love and found family. It really is it’s own story that resolves consequences that happened in the first book.
Simi finds her way and who she is. All in all a satisfying conclusion.
TW: death, slavery, violence
