Unfortunately this book was doing nothing for me at the time. I think a few things took place here: I wasn't in the mood for it, and two not enough within the first 8 chapters was different enough from book one to enjoy it.

For reference if I decide to pick it up again: ended on chapter 8.

Everything done in the first book was rendered mostly a waste by the 3rd of 4th chapter. The characters felt flat. There was almost no space in between actions: one sentence, this guy is asleep and snoring. Two dialogue sentences later, he's awake and asking questions. One sentence, this guy is unconsious. Two dialogue sentences later, he's awake and talking. The forbidden romance seems so forced and we were constantly reminded, multiple times each chapter, of all the pining. The name of things were just put down, especially food, but not described. In ANY culture, if a name of something is written but not described, and the name doesn't hint at what it is, it pulls me out of the story, because then I have to google it. Which might be an on me thing, since googling things you don't know will increase knowledge in other cultures. It was an ok read. It was a popcorn read, but not a gourmet feast.

I picked up Skin of the Deep for an impromptu book club with my sister. My sister and I are very different and we have very different tastes. I was surprised at how much I liked the first book and she was disappointed she didn't like it as much as she thought she would. I think this sequel is more her speed and less mine.

This keeps you at the edge of the seat. The story of love, friendship, and choosing your own path.

There were more moments within this story, that I found myself saying “huh?!”. I love this series and the beautiful gems that it holds. However, I found myself wanting to know each character’s background story which in turn would’ve made for a longer and more fulfilling journey for Simi.

I look forward to more and I hope that in the future we can get our characters life story being told in more detailed ways and not in flashbacks.
