I really liked the setting and I think that the author did a good job with the plot and world building. Its a easy and entertaining book.

But I believe that while the book is nice it would have been great with more time for the characters and plot to develop, perhaps if the first book was split in two.

I love Zethian and the male protagonists but I feel that they needed more character development. The relationships between characters need more pages and time, I missed more conversations between them, more time for them to develop a bond. Zetian at times is too much a edgy "not like other girls" type. I feel that her views on gender and women while correct sound as if a modern woman was pushed into that world instead of one that was born in it.

Pacific Rim. Enders Game. Hunger Games. Red Rising. Love all of them. So why the 4? Honestly a 3.5. Good read. Fast action. The protagonist is a Chinese frontier girl in a world where women are subjugated and all sense of worth beaten out of them gets a shot at greatness. Still with me? Good. Did I see the ending coming? Uhh yes. Is the book worth a read? Fosho. Does it leave an impact? Kinda. Heavily derivative but combines well in parts.Good start. Great middle. Whimper of an end. Leaves much to the second book. All in all, an okay read. The protagonist is portrayed to be the only woman doing any good. Extreme righteous anger takes away any subtlety. Some brilliant moments, they come far and few.Comes off heavy handedly woke. Hope the series picks up.

I’m simply in awe of this book, it’s author, and the message. I’ve never been so excited for a sequel in my life.
