This book was such a delight! I don’t have a lot to say about it other than the fact that it was just fun. This is a second chance romance and I would’ve loved to have some flashbacks or something, but they’ve known each other since they were children. He hasn’t told anyone in this village that he’s a duke and he’s finally at the point where he has to come clean because he can’t win her over without her knowing his true identity! Meanwhile Chloe and her dad are working on developing and selling a sauce so that he could get revenge on the men who stole his recipe. This whole story just felt so cozy and I loved it. (And as always, Mary Jane Wells makes it even better.)

Very cute, low stakes plot with a realistic love scene!

The fact that this was written in 2020 very much influenced this book, for better and for worse.

The stakes are incredibly low and the atmosphere is very warm. The story is very self indulgence, which i enjoyed some aspects of
(he's absolutely devoted to her, they're both virgins, modern sensibilities about her working, consent, etc..)
but also caused the story to grind to a dead halt whenever Milan wanted to give the background on something. Which happened way too often, and some things (*cough cough* how the wedgeford trials are played) were not a big enough part of the current plot to warrant page upon page of exposition.

I am a huge fan of Courtney Milan’s work; I have read all of her historicals and can’t pick a favorite because I love them all. But I adored this book. I had a HUGE smile on my face the entire time I was reading it—and I basically inhaled it—because it was everything I love about Courtney’s writing. Great banter, lots of humor, a ton of heart...I loved it. I truly hope she continues this series, because I loved all of these characters and want to spend more time in Wedgeford. I just really loved the community she created in this series.
