This book is hands-down the best in the series. The introduction of the characters is fun and exciting and the suspense keeps the pages turning until the very end.

Age range: 14+
Younger readers may find it a little too violent.

Nine children and their guardians came to Earth; they look and sound human, but are endowed with powers that make them stronger and faster than human beings can ever wish to become.  The plan was for the kids to grow up on Earth, train to develop their individual strengths so they can become powerful enough to defeat their enemies.  But their enemies are hunting them down, so they all go into hiding, separately from one another, hiding in small rural towns that no one would think to look for them.  However, one through three are killed and they're closing in on Number Four.  Elements of the book are woven throughout the movie, but they're marked differences in the screenplay.  The book was mostly medium-paced, until the end, when the action picked up and happened pretty quickly.  Overall, I enjoyed this book and will be reading the next book in the series.

Two alien races are on Earth, one hiding from the other. Humanity's future is in the balance as the evil race intends to detroy all humans in order to pillage and plunder the Earth for its resources.

The setup of a the good teen aliens as ordered by number, so that the evil aliens can only kill them numerically was interesting, as were the powers (legacies) that the teens develop at some point. Romantic involvement with humans, chimera creatures, epic battles, and even clashes with HS jocks round out the features.

I think teens will like it and will want to read the series. I thought the romance sections were overly long, but not badly written, and teen girls will gravitate toward them. The boys will like all the action.

What I did not understand was how a first person narrative of Number Four was being written by the ruling Elder of the good aliens, when he clearly existed as legend in the narrative. Was it possibly a legend developed when the numbered teens were whisked off Lorien as first graders? I couldn't figure that out, and it seemed like a really dumb mistake. And then I find out that it was supposedly co-authored by James Frey. That's sad.

Really like this story about Number Four and the nine Lorien Gardes. I do think some of the action scenes lacked a bit of action but all in all it was a great story and can't wait to read the next installment. This book was definitely better than the movie although I quite enjoyed the movie as well. The book allows for the growth of some relationships where as in the movie it seemed rushed for obvious reasons. The movie also altered a lot of what happened in the book and appreciated the quality time the book gave with certain characters that the movie did not.
