A fascinating look at the life of Sir Patrick Stewart. Well worth the read.

They say never to meet your heroes. There's an ongoing conversation about whether you can separate the art from the artist. I keep mulling this over in my mind, along with the fact that humans are by nature complex, as I consider Sir Pat's memoir. His accomplishments and talent are unquestioned, and I kept adding titles to my watch list as I spent time listening to him over the last 19 hours. But how to disentangle this from the fact that he is, by his own admission, a pretty terrible husband and father. This doesn't decrease the excellence of his work, but I don't know what to do with the knowledge that this work was done at the expense of relationships that were ostensibly important to him. Am I going to rewatch TNG and his Hamlet with David Tennant? Yeah, of course. Am I gonna feel weird about it? Probably.

4 stars for storytelling, as I quite enjoyed listening to Sir Patrick Stewart recall the stories of his life and career in this audiobook. Readers should know, though, that this leans heavily into his career and less so into his personal life and relationships. If you’re not here for Shakespeare, this can feel a bit plodding through the middle. However, I liked his honesty about his successes and failures on stage and off, as well as his admission of being an imperfect human like the rest of us. There’s not much here about TNG, but the bits about it are lovely.

As a long time Star Trek TNG fan, this was such a treat! I admittedly didn’t know much about Patrick Stewart outside of Trek, and this was so fun to listen to. Love that it was read by the man himself too!

I don't normally enjoy memoirs, but I'm a fan of Sir Patrick Stewart, so I had to see what this book was all about. I definitely recommend the audiobook; listening to it in his own voice is a great experience with how good of an actor he is. He does accents, voices, dramatic timing, and so much more.

While I was interested in his stories overall and hadn't heard any of them, being a very casual fan, there were a few that I wasn't quite sure why he included them. They weren't bad, they just felt like non-sequitors in the grand scheme of the book's narrative.

That being said, I appreciated how Patrick Stewart told these stories from his life with humility and respect for those involved. While he did grow up with a certain amount of prejudice, he tells these stories now as someone who has since grown into a very accepting and progressive-minded individual. Of course, there's always the possibility that something is being omitted or falsified, but even if this were a true work of fiction it would still be a good book to me.
