The was a well written and well told story, I just wish I hadn’t subjected myself to the content.

This book is genuinely scary and terrifying. I don't think I've ever read a book that was as explicit and disturbing as this one. This book piqued my interest in human depravity. This isn't a novel for the faint of heart. It's dark and twisted, and it'll make a lasting impression on everyone who reads it. PLEASE check the trigger warnings before you read this!!

The novel's opening did not completely captivate me. The plot moved slowly at first as we were introduced to the individuals, and it took me a while to become fully immersed in the story. This novel was enjoyable, but it wasn't as thrilling as I had anticipated; in fact, it was just downright disturbing and unsettling. There was so much build-up and so many details, all leading up to a lackluster conclusion. Although I enjoyed the book, I believe the plot twists would have been more dramatic if the story had been more fast-paced.

My rating system:

5✩ - Well, there went my day. Couldn't put it down. I think it destroyed any hope of reading other books...
4✩ - This book was fantastic! I really enjoyed it. It may be missing something, or there is one major issue in it, but overall I would highly recommend it!
3✩ - This book was average. Neither good nor bad. Certainly not the worst book I've read, but not the best either.
2✩ - This book really just wasn't for me.
1✩ - Well, I finished it. How? I don't know. Definitely do not recommend it.

I was really looking forward to reading this book after what I’d heard about it. I’m a fan of dark stuff that puts you on the edge of your seat and, whilst the content was extremely distressing, I still felt it fell a little flat for what I was expecting. I think it could have been a lot more creepy and tense than it was. However, it was still an enjoyable read. To summarise, it is the story of two distant sisters who come together when one of their husbands gets murdered. However, both sisters are still not over the disappearance of their sister which caused their father to commit suicide before the book commences. When investigating the murder of Claire’s husband, they find out some very worrying things about his life that he kept hidden from her. Would recommend if you’re into crime novels.

i was so close to setting this book down and never returning to it because the torture depicted got so increasingly graphic and harrowing. i’m glad i didn’t, i needed the ending that came. also glad that this isn’t getting a film or tv adaptation like one of slaughter’s other books (which i have yet to read), it would be so painful to watch and agonizing for the actors to portray. these characters, like those in the lovely bones, will remain in my memory as placeholders for the countless people— including my child self —who suffer from and are lost to violence.
