A book I could read a hundred times and still not come close to absorbing it all. It is still topical, despite the advances of photography. I cannot stop wondering what she would say about the advances with photoshop. Everywhere I go, I see something and think of the impact photography has had and what Sontag would say.

A sweeping anthropological investigation into the manner by which Photography has immutably altered our perception of the world around us. Sontag's essays range from explorations of the evolution of the American photographic tradition, examining the manner by which culture/politics shape our understanding of the purpose of photography itself, to mapping how Photography, the 'realistic' medium, which supposedly liberated painting to pursue abstractionism, ironically followed this very same trajectory. An interesting read, yet certainly am left with the feeling that quite a lot of it may have passed over my head.

definitely a book that is worth reading again and i found it most interesting because of the attempt to place and tie photography into the fine arts (especially outlining it's connections to surrealism) not convinced about all of her arguments and her big picture world view is more tied to the previous century but overall it's most interesting when trying to ponder the nature of art and how photos have morphed from a trojan horse into the barbarians at the gates. even if you don't agree it's very thought provoking
I can’t think of a book more necessary than this for understanding our lives in the post modern image world than this book - maybe Berger’s Ways Of Seeing which I feel sits in tandem with this as necessary polemics. This book is necessary for your image literacy and also ones ethics as we have all have become image makers. It’s truly that important. I don’t need to reiterate any of Sontags points, you just need to read it. It’s Essential.
It definitely has some good views and ideas in it. However, it is also incredibly dry. I enjoyed the read, but probably won't read it again any time soon or recommend it to any not interested in photography.
