Essential reading for anyone who loves not only photography but visual arts in general. What Sontag wrote 50 years ago still cuts deep, from the hidden power of images to the manipulation of cameras by governments and corporations to deceive and lie. Very dense read, as nearly every paragraph features immense truths on pictures and the world at large, but it was all worth it.

Io questo libro lo rileggo periodicamente e non me ne stanco mai.
La mia prima copia è stracolma di sottolineature: trovo che nessun saggio sulla fotografia riesca ad eguagliare questo per varietà di spunti, argomenti, chiarezza e fervore. Ha un modo di scrivere scevro dalle inutili difficoltà tecnico/lessicali che molta gente crede necessarie per la stesura di un saggio: parla di argomenti complessi rendendoli lineari.
Lo trovo un piccolo capolavoro.

Despite the age of the essays, they resonate very much with today's society. Sontag does a thorough job exploring, identifying, and classifying how photography has changed the world, how it stands as an art form, and how the world has perceived the instrument.
