Challenging and stuffed with theory; not a particularly enjoyable read. It’s also unique and brilliant and brimming with new creative ways to think about things. It’s like Susan Sontag spontaneously generates hot takes and then finds ways to make theories on art and history and culture support those takes. At the very least, she’s making all kinds of statements and she seems to presume that the rest of the world agrees (or would agree) with her. Maybe that’s the key to being a public intellectual: cite prior generations’ authorities and continue the cycle with new comments (in the same way that people now cite to Susan Sontag). Do I agree with her stuff? I’m not sure - but I do know that that’s not the point, personally. I like when someone challenges or expands my viewpoint and, in that respect, this book delivers.
