This short novel set in India in 1857 is one of Anne Perry's Christmas novels but seems more like an historical novel than a Christmas story. It describes some of the events relating to the 1857 Indian Rebellion and centers around a trial of a man accused of treason. I enjoyed the historical details and even read more about what happened during the rebellion.

Since I discovered Anne Perry's Christmas series, I have looked forward very much to this annual treat. This was, honestly, not my favorite of this series. The mystery itself was a good one - the clues were all there and, yet, at the end I was completely stymied. When the answer was revealed, I mentally slapped myself on the forehead for having missed the vital clue.
No, it was the secondary story that did not resonate with me. I wanted a little more romance, a little more holiday magic.
While this is certainly a worthy entry into the series, it is not one that I will return to, as I have with others.
