this was okay, a good intro to the series. i'm not the biggest fan of prequels, so it was just okay to me. it was intriguing *enough* for me to continue the series (and i own it all physically so might as well), but i can't say it had my attention from the get-go.

no spoilers but damnnn OK

I was recommended this book by a YouTuber who said that it was a really good series and brought up a lot of questions about mixed race couples. Being a mixed person I was definitely interested in picking it up, but my oh my did this little prequel surprise me.

The very beginning was a little offputting because when the two main characters first connected all he could talk about was her rack which really bothered me. However as the story goes on and they get to know each other the conversations they have are actually quite thought-provoking even to a reader. I wouldn’t say it’s the deepest thing in the world, but it was interesting to read about and not something I expected from a flippant little 150 page novella like this one. I also appreciated how the author could fit a full on story into such a short amount of pages, usually with novellas like this I feel like I’m missing a lot of context (maybe it was the love at first sight plot) but it just really worked well.

The characters were also really nice to read about, I loved the fact that it was a mixed race couple, but also the girl character Bristol was such a badass and I loved her character and the way she wasn’t afraid to say what she felt or ask questions that not many other people would.

No spoilers but the plot twist at the very end was actually crazy. Again I wasn’t expecting much from such a short book but man was I blown away lol. Definitely kept me hooked for reading the next book because I have no clue how he’s going to solve this problem.

this is a pretty high rated four stars but it just didn’t push me over the edge enough to have that fifth Star added in there. Nevertheless it was a great recommendation and I’m definitely moving onto the next book.

slight mention of sexual assault, drug abuse, racism, and neglectful parents.
