Imaginative and dark. Feels like an Abercrombie novel, with aging highlanders included. Lots of fun though!

An enjoyable romp. Some themes feel familiar (the grizzled veteran warrior with a past he regrets), others innovative (ruling mages of radically different - but still despotic - natures who mine the bodies of dead gods for their magic). There are shades of grey in this - the "heroes" are not all likeable, the villains are not all unlikeable. There were points within the plot or in the writing which felt a little heavy handed, but the intrigue builds to a crescendo of battle where a great deal is at stake and (without being too spoilery) not everyone survives.
