I love this book. Read it multiple times. The arc Zadist takes is incredible and touching.

June 2023:

Me: is stressed.
Me: immediately rereads my Comfort Dark Fucked Up Vampire Romance.

November 2021:

Why am I crying in the ZeroSum Club right now? This was so good. JR Ward has read my mind and taken my emo teenage fantasy of a brooding, tortured, damaged hero and made him come to life in this ridiculous tale. This was so extreme and over-the-top, and it has about 10,000 content warnings, but if you buy in to it, and in to the weird world and society of these vampires, it just works.

Zsadist (I know, lol) was something else. Totally not a guy who would EVER work in real life, but within the melodrama of this paranormal world, he fits right in. He and Bella are so sweet to each other, but both need to find their way to each other in their own time. There were a few frustrating miscommunications, but they made sense given the characters and their reservations.

There was definitely more of a focus on Zsadist's healing and growth, but he had more of that to do, so it makes sense. Also, their relationship really starts in book 2, but you get more context about their personalities and the roles they play if you read both the first and second books before reading this one.

SpoilerThe only thing I hated was that Wellsie died. It was so heartbreaking and I can't believe Tohr is gonna have a romance with someone else eventually. Just seems wrong.
