This started off very promising! I loved Jonathan Harker’s POV in Transylvania and then… we change pov’s and it’s downhill from there. Such a boring book. I feel like Dracula is a “classic” because of all the adaptations/stories/movies of the original because literally everyone else did a better job than this. The writing style seriously diminishes any possible tension and the constant jumping between characters was not my thing. Large quantities of information are constantly repeated. The treatment/comments on women are so so exhausting & the “thoughts” that the women had about the men (gag me please). Also wasn’t expecting so much religious commentary; main characters compare themselves to crusaders eliminating “evil”

Tense and creepy start, but, quickly became slow and was painfully long. I greatly enjoyed the prose and structure though.

It is clearly of its time. I appreciated the attempt at feminism but the female characters were very one note. And there is a heavy emphasis on demonizing otherness.

This book is so well written that even though I obviously knew that Count Dracula was a vampire, I was as curious as the group to figure out what was going on. *Something vampiry happens because of a vampire in a book about THE vampire *
Me: is surprised as though I've never heard of vampires before.

You cannot go wrong with the classics. They are classic for a reason.
