2.5/2.75 only because I still love Emily Henry's writing and dialog.
This book was so frustrating. Alice’s whole personality is being almost delusionally “bright side” and having comical taste in clothing (down to a 1960s I-Dream-of-Genie-esque nightie that of course plot requires Hayden see), which in the real world would mean no one would take her seriously as a person let alone a serious journalist, but in a book means she’s quirky and lovable and not like other girls! It's like Poppy from People We Meet all over again, and it was unbearable there too.
Alice is just such a deeply unimpressive person and journalist, yet we’re supposed to just believe everyone - including herself - thinks she’s so exceptional that she wows Margaret and Hayden falls head over heels in about two weeks. Hayden is the one with the journalistic and people instincts, which he uses to nudge Alice, and then once she finally gets there, we’re meant to think she’s brilliant. Not to mention her adorably quirky devoted friend group straight out of Bridget Jones.
Hayden is physical and emotional perfection (a hint of grumpiness at the start, but once it serves the plot, he’s all empathy and deep devotion to Alice’s needs) with no depth. Sure, he has a throwaway background of living under the rigid expectations of his parents and the microscope of the small-town press.
But his main personality seems to be sudden love, devotion, and ferocious attraction for Alice, while also weirdly refusing to have intercourse until the "contest" is over, but also needing to constantly go down on her because he can't help not pleasure her, but also wanting no pleasure in return, except he lets her blow him once him, after which he immediately declares his love , until he suddenly says yes to intercourse before the contest is over, because…reasons (read: his love is just so strong!)? His does not behave like an actual human, just a perfect book boyfriend plot machine.
The relationship timeline generally just made no sense, as in I legitimately don’t know how the laws of time and space permitted them to experience so much in the time presented. In just 2+ weeks, with one of them working every day but Sunday, they managed to:
• start by avoiding inter-personal communication for a while at Hayden’s insistence;
• then begin bumping into each other a couple times and bond;
• get physical;
• have some intentional dates; and
• take a weekend visit to her mom’s;
• declare “this isn’t like you” (him to her);
• think "I’d love him if he let me;” and
• declare his love a day later after what was apparently by the world’s most emotional blow job .
All this while also having a couple fights during that time that lead to them not seeing each other or speaking for a couple of days each time.
Actually, none of the characters behave like actual humans would - they all appear to make decisions based on the plot. And Alice’s choices at the end are completely insane and hurtful, but somehow she is the one who gets the grand gesture from Hayden, when it should be her making it to him.
The book also contains plot inconsistencies/illogics throughout, Alice missing the obvious multiple times, and a non-sensical conclusion to the great mystery Hayden discovered but then Alice took on. By the end, I was just rushing to finish.

Not my favorite by EmHen, but an enjoyable read. My main critique is that I wished the FMC & MMC’s HEA had more breathing room in the narrative. I enjoyed the secondary story & how it related thematically to the romantic plot & Alice’s character development.
