While I appreciated the discussions of gentrification and cultural belonging, the writing left no room for the reader to make their own conclusions and explore different interpretations of the themes present. I say this because the writing, in my opinion, was very simplistic and reduced my enjoyment of the book due to the lack of creativity in exploring plots and themes. ALSO, I don’t believe this romance makes sense because the development of the romance between Julieta and Ramon, BOTH ALMOST 30, seemed to mimic that of an impulsive teenager because they both fell so hard from just ONE MEETING. However, despite all those criticisms, there were some cute moments towards the end of the book.
It was a light read, but also a somewhat frustrating one.

While working at a Day of the Dead celebration, Julieta meets her "Romeo" and is swept off her feet. When her "Romeo" turns out to be Ramon whose father is trying to destroy her neighborhood she runs out on him. Their romance seemed a bit unrealistic borderline fantasy. Overall, did enjoy Julieta's family especially the tias.

I genuinely forced myself to finish this book because I made it a goal of mine to have 0 DNF’s this year. It’s that bad y’all

Had a few cringe moments that took me out of the story. Especially the mentions of homeless people.  Other than that, it was fine.

This book felt like the reader is in a journey with Doug from the movie Up… Squirrel! Four minutes later another squirrel! The whiplash between emotions was just too much!

My biggest complaint is that the romance was poorly paced, partly due to Ramon being such a terrible human. He claims he wants to help the Chicano community but then does nothing about increasing rents. He also loves his car more than anyone! I didn’t know what a McLaren was and I’m devastated that I now know…

Most comments or realizations in this book are followed by a contradictory statement or action. There are unfortunately examples throughout the whole book. It’s pretty painful.

The one thing I enjoyed about this book is the description and appreciation for Dia de los Muertos.

I have to give it 1.75 stars.

Thank you first to Duolingo for providing me with basic Spanish knowledge, I would've had to google translate my way through some important parts of this book if not for you
