On one hand, the mystery was interesting, the thrilling bits intense, and the structure was fun. Having mixed media from the future opening each section was a nice choice for suspense building.

On the other hand, although realistic, alcoholic characters are boring to read. Congrats, half your problems are directly your fault, and I don't feel sorry for you at all.

Not as good as Turn of the Key, in my opinion. I still enjoyed it. There were a couple of big shocks for me.

This was quite a wild ride.  I noticed how masterfully Ware weaves in clues so that you don't realize they are clues.  I truly enjoyed trying to piece it all together before the characters did (but I didn't).  This reads somewhat dark, but not as dark as some other mystery/thrillers.  I loved the setting of the luxury cruise ship.

This book is a locked room mystery in which Lo is the "witness" of someone falling off the cruise ship into the water.  A number of factors prevent anyone from believing her, namely that she begins the story by being the victim of a robbery.  There isn't anyone missing from the ship, either.  There are other travel writers on the ship who could be suspects, and there are also the billionaire, elite-class passengers, too.  The cast of characters is small enough and the clues are there for you to figure it out yourself.

Omg, the struggle for me to remember the characters for the first half or so of the book… they didn’t even have similar names it was mostly that there were a lot and they didn’t have roles so much as a few lines here and there throughout. I kept forgetting who was the photographer, who was the investor, and who was the owner of the boat! The flipping between using a character’s first name, then calling them by their last name later didn’t help (and wasn’t driven by familiarity etc., just seemed random flip flopping between how they are referred to). Eventually I caught on as certain characters had more of a role or interaction. I felt the book was interesting yet I was kind of looking forward to the audio book being done, which is why I rated it 3. It dragged on at parts (multiple escapes, confinement bits, tons of detail and repetition about what Lo is thinking). Narration by Imogen Church was well done.
