"Kabin itu memang kosong. Tidak ada tamu di kabin sebelah. Kabin itu tidak berpenumpang sedari awal".

The Woman in Cabin 10 ini contoh novel yang ga ngerti sebenarnya mau fokus di misteri, psychology thriller atau malah jadi survival genre. Semuanya dicampur aduk oleh pengarangnya. Sebenarnya gue ga keberatan, seandainya tokoh utamanya minimal bikin simpatik.

Kenapa kok gue kesel sama cara penulisnya membawakan narasi Lo? Sejak awal emang susah mau simpatik sama Lo, jelas - jelas punya pacar yang bucin parah tapi pacarnya malah dijudesin bahkan begitu taking things for granted pas si pacar, Judah, rela meninggalkan pekerjaannya dengan bilang kalau Lo ga pernah minta Judah buat berkorban. Udah tahu kurang tidur, butuh minum obat anti depressant, Lo malah MABUK - MABUKAN. Gini mau simpatik gimana coba, hahaha.

The Woman in Cabin 10 sebenarnya menggambarkan dengan baik idiom "no good deeds goes unpunished".
Tapi gimana lagi, udah kadung kesel sama tingkah laku Lo.

Ga bakal gue baca ulang tapi kalau nyari mystery dan thriller suspense (dan sedikit unsur survival) dengan unreliable narrator, menurut gue, The Woman in Cabin 10 masih sedikit lebih baik dibandingkan dengan The Silent Patient.

I would not consider this Ruth Ware’s best work. It was a fine story with a predictable ending. However, it took me forever to get into. I had to keep coming back to it, and I just wasn’t engaged until about 50% of the way through, which I think is too long to finally gain my attention.

Overall, it was a decently enjoyable read, but not something I’ll come back to or highly recommend.

Omg, the struggle for me to remember the characters for the first half or so of the book… they didn’t even have similar names it was mostly that there were a lot and they didn’t have roles so much as a few lines here and there throughout. I kept forgetting who was the photographer, who was the investor, and who was the owner of the boat! The flipping between using a character’s first name, then calling them by their last name later didn’t help (and wasn’t driven by familiarity etc., just seemed random flip flopping between how they are referred to). Eventually I caught on as certain characters had more of a role or interaction. I felt the book was interesting yet I was kind of looking forward to the audio book being done, which is why I rated it 3. It dragged on at parts (multiple escapes, confinement bits, tons of detail and repetition about what Lo is thinking). Narration by Imogen Church was well done.

“I knew what it was like to be that girl — to realize in an instant, how incredibly fragile your hold on life could be, how paper-thin the walls of security really were.”

Lo is a travel journalist who gets the opportunity to advance her career by traveling on a luxury cruise’s maiden voyage. It quickly becomes a nightmare when she seemingly witnesses a murder in the middle of the night. Already suffering from the aftermath of being attacked in her own home, Lo must discover exactly what happened and how to make others believe her when there’s no evidence of a crime.

Lo is a delicate character. She’s suffering from chronic anxiety and depression, along with having just been attacked. She also seems to have a drinking problem. It altogether has proven her to be a very unreliable narrator, but she’s the only one we’ve got here.

First of all, what kind of journalist investigates a crime and doesn’t take any notes? She may have been a travel journalist, but she clearly stated she used to want to be an investigative reporter and that desire partially compelled her to continue her investigation on the ship. But there are literally no notes in sight, which is even worse as she’s knowingly putting herself in danger. 🤨

Anywho, 😮‍💨 this was unfortunately a very slow read for me. The primary drive pushing me to not DNF were the few passages set in the future which provided a more compelling mystery to me than the actual murder.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it. But it took some pushing through first to get there.

A lot of the reviews didn’t seem to enjoy this book but I loved it. I thought it was really gripping and had this crazily eerie claustrophobic feel to it and I think it genuinely had great tension.

I think the first half of the book wasn’t really necessary, the burglary plotline wasn’t really essential to the story and so it started out pretty slow. However, the second half of the book is great and very fast paced. I loved the snippets of news articles placed in between that kept you wondering what had happened to Lo.

I can see why people dislike Lo’s character, she’s a bit of a nervous wreck and is a bit too irrational at times and isn’t always the kindest to people around her and since the whole book is from her perspective, if that type of character annoys you, it ruins the book. While Lo did have that stereotypical troubled woman trope with her antidepressants and drinking I’m glad it didn’t take over the whole book like it has with others (such as Girl on the Train). She did go through some pretty traumatic stuff though, so her personality never really bothered me too much.

I loved the cruise ship feel as it just makes the murder mystery that much more compelling and claustrophobic, which made it a more unique read for me. You definitely get the infuriating feel when no one around Lo believes her and you just want to know more about what’s happened. My only main criticism is that the ending felt a bit too unrealistic, I wanted more detail about Lo’s escape back to civilisation. It felt a bit rushed (as it always seems to be with this genre). I also felt it wrapped up a little too well.
Plus, when we find out Carrie survives at the end and it’s hinted that she shot Richard, I found that a bit incredulous because not only was she trapped and left bleeding, but she’s described as very skinny and frail, so I don’t know how she would have killed a man without lots of struggle or anyone noticing, but oh well.

I enjoyed it and if you like the murder mystery genre then the book is worth a read. It’s nothing groundbreaking or stand out, but it definitely is good.
