This book is SO good I could not put it down. I had a tough time deciding between it being character or plot-driven because the plot of this book is so straightforward, driving, and easy to feel and understand but ultimately the characters' growth describes their choices and makes me feel tense. We begin with a seemingly normal and very realistic family that ends up in a very 0-100 tense situation and the terror is real. The way that Tom's true character comes to fruition lines up with how Heather would experience finding out who he truly is. The book's resolution is extremely satisfying and every character arc feels real. I love the potential super-naturalness that occurs from the islander's perspective, viewing Heather as a sort of Karma for their past sins. Excellent book; would read again.

this easily went from a 4 🌟 read to a 5 🌟 simply because there was ambient noise  and sound effects that truly elevated the listening experience. 1000/10

I don’t normally like books where there is this much gore, but I thoroughly enjoyed this. I truly have no idea why, but I believe the fast pace, semi-fantastical storyline, underscored by the off-the-grid type backdrop just did it for me. While some characters behaved a little more dramatically in the story than they (probably) would in real life, I felt the storyline echoed something real. I definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a quick, intense thriller. Perfect  for Halloween πŸŽƒ

I wasn't expecting this book to be a modern classic but I'd enjoyed the author's book The Chain previously and would say that it helped me get back into reading for pleasure. I'd hoped the same from this book being a fast-paced psychological thriller but it doesn't read with the same enjoyment as the last.
