Had higher hopes for this one! I found myself asking “but why is this happening?” throughout. Didn’t really understand the point of the book 🤔
Graphic: Violence, Murder
Moderate: Sexual assault
Sketchy people living on their own anarchist family compound in a remote island? Sounds creepy, sign me up.
But my god, the dialogue and characterization are unbelievably cringe and unrealistic. For example, the inappropriate and repeated use of fart jokes another reviewer pointed out--one in a professional "hey I just met you" setting, and the other when you're fighting for survival. How and why?!?
Luckily, the book does have a fast-paced plot going for it so I did cruise this book pretty quickly, but the terrible dialogue will not be forgotten.

My first McKinty book and I love love LOVED it!
I don’t want to give to much away but if you like fast paced thrillers (with a bit of culty violent vibes) then I think you’ll devour this

When you read this book you’ll feel like running with the main characters .. it makes you think of what to do to survive.

My two-book brain-dead (both me and the books) spinrack paperback island-based-horror read is over at last. Neither this book nor Hokolua Road have anything whatsoever to recommend them. This one had much worse writing but traded the white male savior for the white female savior. What would indigenous people do without them?
PS: if this book was meant as satire of the characters and the genre then it missed its mark.
PSS: I look forward to having my brain back. Hurry back, brain.

I chose this book as I’m currently doing my alphabet reading challenge and I’m travelling Asia so I thought hey, a thriller set on an island abroad, how fitting.
I enjoyed this book, I didn’t think it got boring during any point of it and I liked Owen and Olivia’s progression towards Heather as a stepmother. I also hated Tom from the start so I’m glad he’s dead, self entitled arrogant arsehole.
The O’Neills had strong The Hills Have Eyes vibes, also I liked Niamh you go Niamh.
