Whooo! This book! This book was a trip! I was not expecting this. I had know knowledge of the source material that inspired this book other than the obvious. I spent the first half of the book wondering when Black Tom would come in, and when he did it was a huge surprise for me. I thought the person who became Black Tom died. Guess what? He didn't.
It's a short book. Less than 2 hours to read according to my Kindle. Definitely pick it up if you've got time to kill.

This book will transport you into 1920s harlem, and you will feel nostalgia as well as anger and hurt for the treatment that Tommy receives. The introduction of mysterious and magical forces are natural as are Tommy's reactions (he seeks to run away like any sane person would do!) But inevitably Tommy is transformed into
Black Tom ... at the hands of white men who were so full hate and racism, indifference to anythin but what they wanted and a hunger for power that they failed to see that when you take everything from a man - his safety, his father, his reason for living... he no longer has a reason to fear you and will side a sleeping King, Cthulhu if need be... to get vengeance.

Quick read dragged out over a month. Prose felt flat and some the dialogue was tepid but it was an enjoyable read. Carried a little from it's core of 'what if Lovecraft wasn't the most racist man alive' but the setting of 1920s black new york was a solid translation.
