superficial characters, disjointed read....I guess it's not a good idea to start with the 12th of a character...not at all the book I was 'sold on' from the library recommendations.

Number 12 in a period mystery series that is terribly addictive.

Perhaps it's because I listened to the audio book but I felt that the book dragged and the character development was poor. I still don't know Ian Rutledge although his relationships with family and the woman he loves seems to be quite relevant to the plot.

This book was far too cluttered with unnecessary side plots, dramas and twists that took away from an otherwise fun story

I thought this installment started out with promise, but maybe the authors just crank them out too quickly. The stuff with Hamish is just stupid at this point (at least he isn't as prominent now) and the actual mysteries are barely developed. I really loved his series at the beginning.

Big giant plothole.
***mild spoiler***

How hard is it to get someone from village A to go over and identify someone in village B?
Fer cryin out loud.

As for the love interest, Rutlegde is still so damaged he can't really relate to others as people, imo. And I don't get what attracts him to certain women.

Although I liked the book, I found it was not as strong as previous. The story was interesting and had a captivating thread running through it. The themes ran the gammet from relationships between fathers and sons and lost loves.
