Mild spoilers

I got about 20% into this book before deciding not to finish it. I found the beginning highly promising and charming, and I was excited to see more of the dynamic between the two main characters.
When one of them died, I was pretty disappointed but figured I would just go ahead and continue reading. But where I found issue was in the reactions of the other characters, particularly Aaslo. You would think he would be more distraught about the death of his “brother in all things,” but instead he shows a little remorse and just keeps going, as if he has to continue the checklist of plot points. Nothing feels very significant and I found myself getting bored. I don’t think I will continue reading.

First DNF. I tried twice to get into this but I just can't. Annoying/idiotic characters, meh at best writing. The audiobook narrator is pretty solid. I like most of his voices and his narration, but he does make the annoyingness of the characters ever more apparent.

completely not for everyone, but the premise of this one really is one for me.

Early DNF at page 40. I don't mind a meandering story (how this one starts) or a lighter tone. But the juvenile protagonists, already abrupt plot twists, and inconsistent prose that could fit into a teen drama just as easily as a light fantasy novel is making me call this one.

The first 2/3s were great, I laughed a lot and was devouring the book, but then it took an odd twist that I felt didn't work well and it lost some of its charm for me. I am excited for more though!
