I loved this. Its quiet obviously one of the first novels Patricia Briggs wrote. The plot itself is a bit of a cliche (as she admits in the intro). But its filled with wonderfully written characters in a vivdly described setting, that the fact the plot is highly guessable doesnt matter. Its a thoroughly enjoyable read whether you're a die-hard Briggs fan or just looking for a good fantasy genre book.
This review is definitely shorter because I typed out a nice review and for some reason it didn't save.
Let me start off by saying that Patricia Briggs happens to be one of my favorite authors. I have had the opportunity to meet her in person and found her to be just lovely. That being said let me get into the review.
First off, I picked this book up in audio and immediately disliked the narrator. Not to much that I wouldn't be able to enjoy the storyline though. That is if the storyline caught my attention. I am sad to say that this one didn't. I can tell that it is definitely her first book as the writing style is clunky and amateurish. I listened to the book for a couple hours but it never managed to catch my interest.

This is the first book of the Aralorn & Wolf series (up to now there are only two books). This book was written at the beginning of Briggs career and an avid reader will notice the differences in this early work in comparsion to her commonly known work, that made her famous.
I always wanted to have this book, but as most fans of Briggs work will know, it was hard to come by. I was thrilled to know that this book was going to be published again and a sequel was coming out too.
If you like an unpolished but very captivating story, in a really interesting setting and world, full of magic, shapeshifters and evil creatures, you will love this book.
Check it out!

This is the first book Briggs ever wrote. In the front of the edition I read she makes some gentle excuses for it, which is interesting because I don't think it needs them. It's a classic fantasy, and she does it beautifully, creating the sort of intriguing and forceful characters that make her later books such a joy. The villain is truly chilling, and the world building convincing. This is my second read of 'Masques' and it makes for a good comfort read. Briggs remains one of my favourite fantasy authors.
I only knew Patricia Briggs from the weird paranormal romance-y paperbacks I saw at the library. Then I picked up Masques for the awesome cover art (a more recent edition, I believe). I was pleasantly surprised - it was a well-paced fantasy with likable but not perfect characters and enough humor to tie everything together.

This is an early work by Briggs, more high fantasy style than her much better known Mercy paranormal (shapeshifters and the like) series and offshoots. I'd really give Masques a 3.5 - there were things I really, really like about it bit overall there were too many OBVIOUS FANTASY TROPEs running around for me to rank it higher. I think if Briggs had been a more experienced writer and/or had a better editor it would have been plotted and cleaned up a bit more.
Not sure I'll read the rest of the series.

Wow, this was such a great read, I loved the world and the magic, and these characters, and oh, the stakes that they were fighting! Can't wait to read more!
This is the first in Patricia Briggs Sianim Series. The forward in this book says it was the first book she wrote and years later when she had a better grasp on her craft she decided to go back and rewrite this book. I don't know what it was like before but now it's pure Briggs. Loved it. There is also a new accompaniment to this book with the same characters that she wrote in 2010. I'm glad there is more.
Apparently, I got the retooled version, rather than the original written nearly 20 years ago. I enjoyed it.
