I thought this was going to a thriller based on the cover and title. If that's what you're looking for, indeed it's not. Old, lonely and cantankerous Margaret is obsessed about her new neighbor across the pond. Both women have their secrets from the past, and neither are quick to divulge those secrets.
I found myself more taken by Margaret's story since Jennifer's seems less interesting. The middle of the book drags on a bit too much, and I wondered how things would go with Sebastian and Jennifer, but that plot seemed to drop.
Margaret was an awesome character. I'd love to read more with her character.

The description would lead you to believe this is a thriller/mystery, but in reality it's the story of two lonely women reflecting on key decisions in their lives. It's full of regret, secrets and a hefty amount of vindictiveness, and still, it is actually rather dull.
"Neighbor" often meanders along, and you stick with it out of hope that the final chapters will end in a cataclysmic reckoning of past sins but in reality it finished with a "oh, huh, that's it?"
At half the length, this would have been an interesting character study, but the slim premise and generally unlikable opinion that forms of both Margaret and Jennifer makes it a disappointing, yet engaging, read.

I was supposed to lead this book at book club tonight but I'm home sick :( I felt like nothing happened until around page 150, then still not much happened. I DID like the exploration of Jennifer's past relationship as it reminded me a great deal of one of mine (that thankfully didn't last) and the insight into an older woman's mind as partial narrator, that was nice. I just wasn't so into the plot or pacing overall.

this book didn't get good until toward the end and I was fully prepared to give it a 4 and it had such a chance to end beautifully but it ended HORRIBLY.

This novel is the lovechild of Notes on a Scandal and Life After Life. Amazing book that alternates between two narrators. Readers will feel the anxiety, tension, and loss dripping from each of these powerful characters.

4.5 stars, seemed rushed at the end. Beautiful story, beautifully written.
