I started to read this series many years ago and gave up early on. Having watched the series a few times, I decided that this would be my summer read. Just finished a few days ago and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Much more detail than the tv show and lots has happened on tv that is still to come in the books. Lots of intrigue, violence, some sex. Well done and I recommend it. Not for everyone but if you think you might be interested, give it a shot.
This is a terribly addicting read. Even though it seems a simple (if a bit endless) fantasy loosely based on medieval times and Nordic legends, it maintains an exciting page turning pace. The characters, family alliances and conflicts, cultures, customs, and lands are well drawn and almost familiar. The political intrigues play out realistically, largely because historically we can easily reference the scheming for power that goes as far as murder to achieve it's goals. As Americans we are achingly familiar with the desire to be the good guys despite geopolitical aggressive actions by our leaders that make us question whether morality and power are mutually exclusive concepts.
My biggest complaint is that this saga never ends. After five books, it shows no sign of wrapping up mysteries and questions unleashed in early books. I am not convinced the author George RR will ever complete the story. Perhaps in doing the HBO production stuff he's grown bored with writing. Or more likely, perhaps like the dragons, this story has grown in scope beyond even his ability to control it.
