This was one of the best prequels I’ve ever read. The first book of the trilogy had a lot of world building aspects to it, but this really took the world and ran with it! I can’t wait to read more!

One of the few Jacques novels I just couldn't get into as much when I was a kid; perhaps the darker tone (I mean all of them have a dark tone somewhere but this one is pretty grim all-round) was what did it, maybe not - I think the writing holds up but it's not my favourite of the long-running series.
