Hieno ja koskettava saaristolaistarina ja ihmisistä jotka asuvat siellä. Se on upeaa aluetta ja oikein mukava lukea jotain sieltä.

This book bored me to death for the first three quarters then made me cry my eyes out in the last.
What I realised, after crying my eyes out, was that, whilst boring me, it was making me care about the characters without letting me realise it.
It was these very mundanities in the first two to three hundred pages, the milking of cows, the giving of sermons and raising of children, that made the characters so human and relatable, so that, anything that effects them, is going to have a sharp impact. I stuck with them for so long, I felt like I knew them. It made me remember the beauty in subtle storytelling.

Pierwsza czytana przeze mnie książka z Marpressowej serii Bałtyk - „Piękno ludu” podbiła moje serce. „Lód” niestety tego sukcesu nie powtórzył. Od razu zaznaczam - to jest bardzo dobrze napisana powieść. Kunszt pisarski Ulli-Leny Lundberg jest niezaprzeczalny - jej opisy skutych lodem i spowitych mglistym, wiecznie zachmurzonym niebem skalistych Wysp Alandzkich oraz powolnej przepełnionej rutyną codzienności małej społeczności są wybitnie realistyczne, obrazowe i drobiazgowe. Niejeden reportażysta mógłby talentu i stylu autorce pozazdrościć.
Uwielbiam powieści niespieszne, traktujące o zwyczajnych ludziach i sprawach przyziemnych - wręcz zazwyczaj preferuje takie nad wybuchową i dynamiczną akcję. W “Lód” jednak zupełnie nie mogłam się zanurzyć, cały czas byłam z boku tej historii, nie potrafiłam z siebie wykrzesać jakiś większych emocji. Właściwie to całą moją lekturę mogłabym podsumować jednym przymiotnikiem - “beznamiętnie”. Jedyne czym bardziej się zachwycałam to wspomniane już opisy - przyrody i ascetycznego życia niewielkiej społeczności zamieszkującej wyspę. To po prostu nie mój typ powieści. Mogę czytać długie na kilka stron, szczegółowe opisy krajobrazów, jednak przy tym potrzebuję wyrazistych głównych bohaterów - kogoś z kim mogłabym sympatyzować albo i nie znosić i życzyć mu jak najgorzej. Kogoś kto sprawi, że zaangażuję się w opowiadaną historię. Tymczasem w powieści Lundberg nie ma takiej postaci - praktycznie wszyscy mieszkańcy to postaci drugoplanowe, natomiast na pierwszy plan wysuwa się właśnie sama wyspa i długie, pełne prostoty i monotonii spędzanej na niej dni.

I'm very sorry to admit, but I didn't see the beauty in this book. Aside of the rather uninteresting "a day in the life of" accounts of the main characters passing through time, nothing really happened through the whole story... And then the main character died. I just fail to see the point the book. I can't say it was boring, but it was very difficult and a drag to read. And it is beautifully written.
