the story is objectively thrilling and the moral re: ethics and justice are interesting but the racism makes it hard to have fun with this book. even though they changed the title my edition had “natives don’t mind dying” on page 57. not sure if i just had an old edition or what

I would’ve given this a solid 3.5 until I looked into it’s racist history. It’s an okay mystery, but I regret reading it after finding out it’s original title. If you’re considering reading this, please look into the book’s history so that you can choose not to read it or read it with that information in mind.

I enjoyed the island setting, psychological character-building, and emphasis on dialogue and interpersonal dynamics. There was a note from Christie included in the beginning detailing her personal pride in the complicated plotting of this mystery, and I agree with her: I didn’t guess the solution! This was a quick, engrossing read.

An fun, entertaining thriller that keeps you guessing right until the end.
I liked this a lot more than Murder on the Orient Express (the only other Christie book I've read.
Unfortunately a bit racist.
