Loosely based on the events that took place in Lima Peru back in 1996 where terrorists held a a bench of people at a party hostage for over 120 days. Sounds interesting doesn't it. Well some how the author was able to romanticize this and it seemed that everyone was civilized and calm and the hostages made friendship and feel in love with some of the terrorists. Can we say Stockholm Syndrome. I was so bored. The plot was boring the characters were boring.

Holy moly this was unlike any Ann Patchett book I’ve read. Talk about developing the characters…this novel has virtually one setting - it is ALL about the characters. Its friendship, its grief, its romance, its power, its music. I think I can’t give it 5 stars because I hated the ending. I don’t mean the content of the ending, but how she wrote the ending.
