While listening to a radio show, this book was mentioned along with the challenge that it is the only book in known history that can make a grown man cry. I accepted that challenge. Grogan, a newspaper columnist, dedicates this book to his family's dog, Marley, a rather rambunctious Labrador retriever. Perhaps "rambunctious" isn't strong enough a word; "borderline psychotic" is a bit more appropriate. Marley has the charisma of a dozen dogs and, with his 97 pounds of pure muscle, that's a dangerous thing. He tears through doors, drywall, concrete, steel chains, and people. Obedience classes don't work, Marley's a bit too dense to catch on fully that these lessons are for him. He'd rather spend the time sniffing his fellow dogs' butts, literally. But the Grogan family still love him as he's been there with them through all their ups and downs. And when you have a family member as fiercely loyal as Marley, it's impossible to not love him. This book is very well written and will draw you in whether you are a dog person, cat person, or even if you don't like animals at all. As for the challenge... I failed... twice. Damn.
Love it ... makes me appreciate Bode ... I should read it again!

The kids and I listened to this one on cd for their book club. I guess I am just not a true dog lover, cause I found this one a little melodramatic at times. That said, by books end I wholeheartedly believed Marley was a true member of their family.
This was good. Fast-paced and easy to read. It was funny even though it deals with some very serious subjects. The author's way of writing would have me realizing the humor a sentence or two after the joke. Nice.
I enjoyed this book. I think any dog lover will appreciate the joys, frustrations, laughter and tears that this dog provided for his owners. The author did a great job at telling the story of this dog's life!
