Clod Makes a Friend is a fun loving enjoyable read. I love Clod and his friend Ada. They were like two peas in a pod.

This book is broken out into ages. So as the story progresses, the reader sees Clod and Ana grow up. The more that Ada appeared and interacted with Clod and the other characters, it was easy to forget that she was made of clay. Clod is not a dummy even if his name might indicate so. He is a loveable guy that just wanted to be accepted.

This book is sure to be loved by all readers of all ages. Mr. Pedersen really brought to life this story as well as the characters in it. I was transported into the story as if I could feel the clay that Ada was brought to life from. This will not be the last book that I read from Mr. Pedersen.

"Is his name really Clod?" Learned Yugen asked, speaking each word slowly as though the conversation was already a waste of his time.

Clod Makes a Friend is a touching story of friendship and magic set in a super cute fantastical world. It is also an important story about how dangerous bullying can be. How crushing and harmful the words of a mean bully can be. As many others have been I was also bullied as a kid and reading a story like this was so beneficial to me.

The story follows the main character of Clod. He is a sweet but clumsy somewhat large boy. He takes after his father in many ways. null unlike those around him, he lacks in magical abilities. When it comes to learning sometimes things come to him slower than others. Sadly his teacher doesn't miss the opportunity to tell him just how unskilled he really is. The teacher makes Clod feel worthless and powerless. To make matters worse his classmates and other children make fun of him and bully him constantly. The tell him they consider him to be the ugliest thing they have ever seen. This was a really hard part to read because I connected with this storyline so much.

One day he takes to building a friend out of clay because he is so lonely. One day the clay girl named Ada comes to life. They become friends and it helps him grow as a character. He builds up so much confidence with the kind words she says. Unfortunately, Ada's courage gets them both into some sticky situations. I loved reading this part of the book it was the perfect amount of magic and realism.

Overall the novel was a quick and fun read. I think readers of all ages will enjoy this story of friendship and magic.

Where to start? I loved this book, for so many reasons, but I don't want to spoil the enjoyment of discovery by giving too much away. I even cut down the synopsis a bit because I really don't want to spoil the joys of this book for anyone.

This is a book that you should curl up with, sipping your favorite drink, nibbling on your favorite snack and read all at once.

The characters are darling and lovable, well except for the villain, but that's to be expected. The characters also have a real depth to them, which is more than I expected for a middle-grade book. The fact that all the people in the land of Pag have magic adds an interesting spin as Clod comes to age.

Also cake is a major player in the book. Not the band, the kind you eat. CAKE SAVES LIVES! I often feel that the power of cake is underrepresented in fantasy literature, and "Clod Makes a Friend" goes a long way in fixing that.

If you are looking for a fun, quick fantasy coming of age story this is it. I highly recommend this book.

Bottom Line:
This book is a sweet treat of a read. I'm not just saying that because cake literally saves lives in this book, but because it was a great story, start to finish.
