A nostalgia read but one that seems very poignant in this day and age. I never finished the series and it's one that I always think about.
In elementary school I became obsessed with this book and all these years later I decided to finally see this series through. Considering the age range for these books is 8-12, I still think it hits.
I stand by that this series could be such a fantastic stand alone adult book with some very amazing commentary on pro life movements, climate change, eugenics, etc.

I read this book when I was a kid, but as I got older I didn’t remember much of it. I always wanted to revisit it and never did, for many years I wasn’t even sure of the title.
I finally revisit it and it shatters my heart, it just completely obliterated me. While things were happening in the book I was vaguely remembering them so I knew what was going to happen but I didn’t remember everything being so utterly sad.
Outside of that, the book is well written. It’s an interesting dystopian concept that rooted in real life. The children feel like real kids, they talk like real kids. The families feel real. Everyone is well written.
I don’t know if I ever read anymore of the series when I was young, but I definitely am going to now!

Rarely am I a series book reader but I finished this book sad I didn't have book 2 - 7 to begin IMMEDIATELY. Haddix weaves an amazing tale that pulls you in, puts you in the shoes of each character & has you explore the views from their perspective. My heart felt for each member of this story -- and their plight for something better while they fought their own selfishness.
Yes, while I am struggling to read numerous other books I will devour books 2 - 7 of this amazing series. I must know more about the Shadow children.

Listened to on audiobook with the family on vacation.
I thought this book was very good, kinda strange if you think about it though. It's a pretty good idea for a book though.
