Fantastic. A swoony YA romance, a moving coming-of-age tale, and a heart-wrenching portrait of 1950s America for Chinese Americans, for lesbians, and especially for someone who is both.

The protagonist, Lily, is the dutiful daughter in almost every respect... almost. But stepping out in any way will be punished from multiple sides (lingering McCarthyism and anti-Chinese sentiment, homophobia, sexism), all while Lily discovers truths about herself that she is expected to hide and ultimately deny. A story about bravery and finding a way forward as yourself in spite of everything that stands in your way.

Oh, and the love interest is a wonderful baby butch who stole my heart immediately. IMMEDIATELY. I can't recommend this enough.

LOVED!! The story itself was great, and I found myself relating to the main character at times. I didn't like the ending, but I do appreciate how realistic it was.
