The main four books of the Red Queen series are wonderful! It's an excellent world to get lost in, but this book just ain't it. The writing is fine, and the stories are fine, but it doesn't add anything to the overall storyline. To me, there was only one page that actually answered some questions we were left with at the end of War Storm.

I think this was the perfect companion to the series but not necessary. The short stories involving the main characters such as Mare and Cal could’ve been written in the end of War Storm, obviously just set a few years later.
The short story involving Farley and Shade wasn’t much too my interest, I didn’t like its format and I don’t like Farley so perhaps I am bias but saying that it was interesting to learn more about their relationship because it isn’t developed much in the series, parts are only hinted at.
The short story involving Cal’s parents and Maven’s mother was very interesting, the relationship between Elara and Corianne was known to be poor as hinted at during the series but it was never really understood why. It fuelled hatred for Elara and sympathy for both Corianne and Cal. I also liked the moments that Cal’s Father was present, to was interesting to have his character more involved since he wasn’t in the series long and I always thought there wasn’t much to know.
I wasn’t a fan of the short story that introduced new characters, if it was longer then maybe I’d prefer it but it seemed out of place and I caught myself skimming too much.
The story involving Mare and Cal was left to last and I think it should be left to last because it nicely summarises their future and answers many questions. I also liked the moments shared between Cal and Maven, they were touching and I’d only wished there was more to it or perhaps even a whole short story of them together maybe as children.
Finally it would have been nice to have a story between Maven and his friend Thomas. During the series I had doubts that Thomas was even real, but Maven had such a strong connection and in chapters written from his perspectives, he was always mentioned so it would be nice to have known the origins of the story.
There seems to be a lot of digs at this book but I did actually enjoy it all and read every story. I read it slowly because I knew it would be the last in the series and I had simply fallen in love with the stories.
I think it is important to read if you enjoyed the story, it answered so many questions for me regarding the plot and character relationships and I’m glad I read it in a bittersweet way because some of those questions I had didn’t have the answers I wanted.
The notes by Julian and the passages written by him were so interesting, I kept looking back at the family tress and the notes written about every King that came before Cal. It was so interesting to read about them, they were all so different and you have to admire Victoria for taking the time to do it, she probably didn’t fuss over it too much but it was so effective to me and I kept on rereading them.
Julian’s notes helped to develop the world even more so than Victoria did in the series, it was so interesting to see how this dystopian world came about, it was very creative and I loved it.
In conclusion I would say this is a must read if you are troubled with the ending of War Storm, want to know the fates of the central characters and are interested in the world-building and past/history of the world and character relationships.
