A friend of mine initially recommended this book to me, saying I would love the setting and the fact that the protagonists are writers. I’m always skeptical of fantasy even though I did find the premise intriguing. When it was chosen as a group read with The Global Book Nook, I figured it was a sign that I needed to give it a go. I’m so glad I did!

Iris is doing all she can do when war breaks out between the gods’ — at home, at work, and personally. While writing to her brother who is off fighting, she winds up beginning correspondence with her work rival Roman, albeit, unknowingly. This friendship becomes her saving grace.

I was glad that the fantastical element wasn’t too overwhelming and was more of a backdrop than the main focus being someone who doesn’t gravitate toward fantasy. I absolutely loved the aesthetic of it all as well as Iris and Roman’s chemistry. All around this book was a lovely surprise for me and I look forward to reading the next book!

(Potential) Highlight of the year! The first book where I really wanted to annotate, but I’d love to read to English version and annotate that one!!

I can’t decide whether I’m glad or regretful to have read this book. The way that the human experience of war, grief, family, and love is written was so good.
On the one hand, I’m glad that I read this book, because I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Iris and her relationships with Roman, Attie, and Marisol. I loved seeing her development throughout the book, mixed with both courage and fear in the face of war. On the other hand, I’m absolutely devastated that I subjected myself to reading this book and having to feel the emotions of Forest dragging Iris to safety at the expense of Roman. There’s no doubt that that scene was written well though, the anger and absolute stress I felt had me racing to finish. I so desperately wish I could read the second book so I can see what happens. I just wanted a happy ending, but I guess war proves otherwise.

OH HOW HAPPY I AM TO DISCOVER THAT THIS IS ONLY A DUOLOGY AND THE SECOND BOOK IS ALREADY OUT. THANK THE BOOK GODS.

This book was good; the characters were good and deep enough, especially Roman, I'd say - and the plot was simple but interesting, keeping in mind that this is, first and foremost, a romance novel, not a fantasy one. The worldbuilding is interesting but could do with a little more of the building part, since we barely know anything about the system we're set in. There were some things that made absolutely no sense to me (
why, and I mean WHY, are they getting married at 17 and 19. Be for real, they barely know each other
). Personally I would've loved
more yearning before they got together
, but I suppose I'll live since I love the characters anyway. The writing is very pretty tho, but for me the non-main characters are kinda bland and I didn't really care about them.
