I was LOVING this until the end then I was so sad 😢 I hate when the plot does go how my head has written it 🙄😂
The plot in this evolved brilliantly! The twists and turns kept things interesting - it did lull a bit in the middle - and kept the story moving forward with something more to come without it being unrealistic or forced.
I kept changing my mind on Mare, if she was annoying and dumb or badass. Prisoner Mare, annoying. Warrior Mare, brilliant. Upset with Cal Mare, annoying as hell - it also doesn’t help the chemistry build.
The ‘found family’ was brilliant, really enjoyed the diversity of the characters and the different POVs offered different perspectives on the same characters which was interesting to read.
Loving the tension, loving the deceit, hate the separation of Cal & Mare!

This book is mostly filler. Mare is captured for 50% of the book. It’s very much setting up for what’s needed in the final book. And she was only captured so you could see Maven’s side and what’s going on there. Aveyard does write good battle scenes and I found myself devouring it in the last part of the book. I personally don’t want or think Maven can be redeemed, but it does add to Cal’s character he’s trying to get his little brother back. There’s so much politics in a way I didn’t expect for a YA book and is particularly heavy in this one. I like the insight into Evangeline and her family, and I’ll never protest to lesbianism. Farly is even more badass and I loved how Mare was rescued right before she gave birth so Mare could meet her niece. The first half is slow, and brutal. Warnings for torture both physical and psychological. I am interested in how the world gets concluded and how such deep class divides get fixed when so many silvers aren’t willing to budge but the Scarlett guard is so strong. Definitely a filler book that’s long and slow but still made up of good writing.

I'm sorry, but this was so BORING... like the whole book could've been written as a single paragraph.

I am annoyed with Cal, Maven is probably irredeemable, so that leaves Kilorn. Haa.. Our YA fantasy hearts would never be satisfied with this outcome because we love a lost cause. It is interesting that none of the chapters were from the male pov, which leaves them to be a mystery until the next book at least. But I enjoyed this book better than the previous one and can't wait for the next on to come out.
It was Eragon all over for me because only in the last 100 pages I realised, that this isn't the last book. (Still haven't read that last Inheritance book and it has been years.

3⭐️ this has been such a slow reading month and I think it’s because I have recently been not reading a lot of books that are hitting quite right 😂 I love these characters so much but this book dragggggged. 500 pages for me to feel like nothing really happened isn’t ideal. I will still be reading the next book because it’s the wrap on the series but GOOD LORD lol
The story in the third novel is better than the second novel.
I think Maven is not actually real-villain but he became very evil and cruel because of his own mother's upbringing. Maven was completely unaware of his own feelings, and fought against his loneliness. All the people he trusted disappeared. Although he has power, he has no happiness. Sad, isn't it? But, until now, Maven has still been my favorite character (hahaha).
In this book, there are a lot more moments between Maven and Mare than between Cal and Mare. While Cal is rarely told here, only in the middle and the end. I think if Cal was the main character, he should have been told more and had a lot of influence on the story. But here Cal hasn't really done much since Mare's been a Maven prisoner. Hhhhh.... And in the end, Cal still chose to save the world from the tyranny of Maven when he himself had to give up his world... Well, I'm disappointed....
One of the things I never imagined was Evangeline finally working with the Red Front. Whatttt? I already hated Evangeline since the first book, but now maybe I can forgive her because she also has her own reasons and stories for doing bad things and is very ambitious about being queen. Oh yes, and this book also has a story from Evangeline's point of view.
In conclusion, I give this book a 3/5 rating. Just enjoy reading it. I'm starting to like the characters, but the story is still not very exciting, and in the end, there are still many cliffhangers.
