The first half was SOOO boring but the end partially redeems itself.
Ok I have mixed feelings about this book. I read it this week after having not read this series for a few months. I really like the series as a whole, but the individual books are not as amazing. I like all the detail put into each scene with some pretty intricate descriptions, but sometimes I just wanted to skip over a few paragraphs or chapters just to get on with it. So honestly? Plot line was kinda boring until the 2nd half of the book. But one this I love about this book...
Maven.
Oh my god. I know he’s supposed to be the villain but I can’t help just swooning over him. Literally while reading this I was waiting for more scenes between Mare and him.
You can’t help but feel bad for him because his mother formed him before he had the chance to choose. I remember a specific part where he talked about how his mother took away his love for Cal and for his Father, and it broke my heart. I know he did some very horrible things, and his “love” for Mare was little more than obsession, but still.
Mare as a character bothers me a little. She seems so self-righteous, at least in the first two books. And her inner monologues I just wanted to roll my eyes at. But in this books she seems to develop somewhat while she has six months to reflect in maven’s prison. She at least begins to realize when she’s being self righteous.
Oh and last but not least, Cameron. She annoys me to no end! I remember seeing her chapters and wanting to just completely skip them (and I did once or twice). Her perspective is so limited and judgmental. She sounds like a complaining teenager (which I guess she is). She never considers anything from anyone else’s perspective but her own, and always acts like she’s right about everything.
I really enjoy this series and still want to read the next one!
