This written review is for books 2-4 of the Red Queen series. Considering it is a large story told throughout 4 books, it feels wrong to rate each book since it's just a part of the larger story.. Also because I kept picking up the next book so fast, I didn't give myself time to write a review first lol.

Overall, I enjoyed the Red Queen series storyline. I think it is beneficial to remember this is YA and so many of the main characters are still children. I had the hardest time keeping up with which side of the moral line some of the characters stood on though. Their outward actions and their internal thoughts were a lot of the times conflicting. The biggest part of the story I struggled with was my emotions towards Maven. As a villain, it's heartbreaking to learn what has happened to him that leads him down the path he has traveled. Not only that, but the constant struggle of fighting his emotions against how he was conditioned. Ultimately, Mare made the right decision. I think that Mare really started to strengthen as a character when she stood strong behind her ideals, even if they were not what the heart wanted.

slow-paced
Strong character development: No

I have to say this was utterly disappointing. Because I really enjoyed Red Queen, I’m sad how fast this series went downhill in my eyes. I pushed through this for the most part, always waiting for it to pick up again but it never happened - literally the first 300 (!) pages could have been condensed to max 100 because NOTHING happened. And then the last 50 pages were way too quickly wrapped up, it seems like no editing was done on this book. No real character development, a predictable ending and basically no plot was all the book was. I was really hoping to love this series but i can’t see myself finishing it anytime soon unfortunately after this letdown.

My favorite in the Red Queen series, besides the first book. And way too many feels occurred as well. The second book irritated me more, it was like Insurgent (in the Divergent series) how the protagonist made horrible decisions and made everyone angry....

But Mare x Cal all the way!

Ooof that ending.
