Yoshimoto Banana has such a refreshing way of writing and I found myself wanting to underline a lot (I’m a recovering underliner and page folder). Really good read as in-between palette cleanser and to get out of a reading slump.

for me, the best qualities in banana yoshimoto's writing stand out most in short-form storytelling. i really enjoyed kitchen when i read it. (it isn't even a long book, but a novel nonetheless) in a way, these stories are very, very similar to kitchen, simple but impactful messages that center a lot around connection, love and healing. she ties these pieces together *incredibly* well. it's cohesively one unit, but at the same time, each of them harbor very distinct and unique approaches to their stories. it makes it really special to read.

banana yoshimoto makes me hopeful in human connection and makes me value the ones i have now so much more.

**standouts were lizard and a strange tale from down by the river

4 stars overall. The stories were a little uneven, but there was a standout or two. I love Banana Yoshimoto, but I still end up giving a lot of her books 4 stars. I still recommend it.
