I don't like children. Being around them, hearing them, in stories, just in general, they bother me a lot; I prefer that we do our own things well away from each other. However, the children in this book were alright and I was invested in what happened to them. It was also a nice, short length for a good afternoon listen while doing stuff.
Since the main characters are children, bad stuff happens to children. Also some historical children.

The Folcroft Ghosts by Darcy Coates is another one of her shorter works. It is a nice blend of horror and mystery that made for a good read. I would like to say though that it isn’t very scary at all. The main story follows Tara and Kyle, siblings who are sent to live with their estranged grandparents in the remote Folcroft House. As they settle in, a bunch of strange events start occurring, and they begin to uncover secrets of both the history of the family and the house. While the story is on the shorter side, I still felt it was well-paced. However, in my opinion, it does feel quite similar to the 2015 movie The Visit, but with added supernatural elements. That being said, I felt like I was knowing what was going to happen because of the similarities. This is the reason I gave it a 3 star rating. It was enjoyable but I have enjoyed many of her other writings more because of the suspense, originality, and writing style.
There are also three short stories included at the end of this book. Each tale offered a unique experience.
1. Clock Work is a creepy tale about a mysterious clockmaker whose creations seem to have a life of their own. The suspense builds as the protagonist discovers the dark secrets behind the clockmaker's eerie clocks. I enjoy this story and it got me thinking about how fixated we can get on our work sometime and the benefits or consequences listening to instructions can be.
2 Sub Basement is about an office building that has a terrifying hidden basement within the old building. Several co-works have quit after going down there and we get to experience the protagonist's journey into the sub basement and what he uncovers. I thought this was a chilling and suspenseful short story. It gives a sense of a claustrophobic and intense atmosphere that gave me the creeps.
3. Crypt brings you along on a trip to see a friend who has amazing stories. This time, the story has a strange twist and after leaving, she decides to check out where the mysterious story took place. I throughly enjoyed the supernatural and mystery elements that were brought into this short story.
